What a year!

I’ve learned so many lessons in 2023 (which I’m sharing on the podcast today).

Here’s a sneak peek of one of the lessons: Replace the word “work” with “play.”

Play is one of my superpowers.

It’s something I do every day. It’s in my spirit, and I find ways to express it in the oddest ways.

I’ll dance while I’m cooking dinner.

I’ll tackle Fonz on the bed and wrestle when he least expects it.

I’ll pull out a deck of cards at lunchtime and fit in a quick game of rummy.

My daughter and I love to make up songs while we’re driving.

So, this year, I turned to the power of play when I got into a rut in my business (which is common when you’ve been doing something for almost 15 years).

In the last quarter of 2023, play has helped me turn things around.

Play is where creativity, inspiration, and passion are hanging out. If you feel like you’re in a life rut, may I suggest something radical for 2024? Play more!

Approaching Life With A Playful Spirit

I like to say there are two ways to approach life: viewing it as one big problem or embracing it as a game.

And as you know, I’m all about playing.

The more you approach life with a playful spirit, the more uplifted you feel, the more your energy vibrations soar, and the more your overall happiness increases.

It becomes clear that the things that once felt so serious are, in fact, quite manageable.

As you think about embracing a more playful essence, reflect on this question –

Where are you taking yourself - and life - too seriously?

Here are some ideas for cultivating a playful spirit in your life:

  • Be fully present
  • Seek gratitude even in moments of complaint
  • Say “yes” to the things that bring you joy
  • Transform the mundane into moments of fun
  • Schedule your play – whatever it looks like for you
  • What I know to be true is that approaching your days with a playful spirit will make life so delicious.

If you’ve been afraid of play, I encourage you to give it a try. Approach it as an experiment and see how good your life can get.

On Play & Yoga with Alicia Bright

I had a pretty exciting moment in my yoga practice recently.

My yoga instructor is big on play and curiosity and usually cues us to bring one or the other into our practice.

While we were doing seated folds, which are usually intense for me because my hamstrings are very tight (I joke they could hold up the Golden Gate Bridge), the instructor cued us to wiggle our toes and play with our feet to see what happens.

Instead of wiggling my toes as if I were playing, I noted the heaviness in my legs and the energy with which I usually approach these poses. And I thought of the work we've been doing on play within the School of Self-Image this month.

Then, I brought a playful energy into it.

I gave my toes permission to wiggle and play around. I told my legs they could relax and… a totally different experience!

I could sit in a position I've sat in 1000 times before – which has always been challenging and intense – and ENJOY it.

Whoever thought that play would be the key?!

I guess Tonya Leigh did!
