I just spent a week in Paris, and I’m now sitting by the French Riviera. My senses have been overloaded with beautiful things — the aromas of lavender at the market, the taste of fresh pressed olive oils, a street violinist, the breathtaking view of the Seine at sunset. It’s easy to see beauty when surrounded with so many exquisite sites and sounds, but what about in everyday life? I’ve learned that there are always beautiful things to notice and take in. The question is: are you looking for it?
Without attention, you can spend a lifetime living with regrets of the past or worries of the future, rarely being here, in this moment.
All those days of not noticing beauty — a stunning sunset, the vibrant colors of flowers, the smile of an elderly woman, the warmth of the sun — leads to a dull and unfulfilling life.
We try to push, worry and obsess our way to beauty. However, beauty is rather simple. It’s about being awake and appreciating the moment.
I’ve had to train myself to notice the beautiful things.
The week before I left for Paris, my mind was whirling with things that I needed to do — call the bank, pack, fold the laundry, go to the grocery store, call my broker, not to mention company matters that needed my attention.
One evening, with overwhelm knocking on the door, I was snapped out of the “do brain” and heard something so beautiful — the sound of six teenagers laughing loud from my daughter’s bedroom.
For a few moments, I was so present, forgetting all the things on my to-do list and taking in those things on my to-cherish list.
I soaked up the boisterous noise floating down the hallway and into the living room.
It was my wake up call to stop and take in this moment, because I won’t always have those feisty teenagers romping around my house.
Then, I heard the delicate sound of aspen trees outside my window.
This was followed with my noticing the gorgeous fresh bouquet of flowers on my dining room table.
With a shift of focus to right here, right now, I became overwhelmed, not with all my responsibilities, but with the beauty available to me at all times.

In this very moment, there are so many stunning things to notice.
Are you awake enough to experience them?

Dappled autumn sunlight streaming into my house, one of the cutest dogs on the face of the earth wagging her tail excitedly as we get ready for her walk, and golden leaves scattered across my driveway are some of the most beautiful things I'm taking in today! xo
Beautiful Pat!
The aspen leaves are so golden here Pat! Such a beautiful scene.
Laughter and smiling faces at the 'Singing for the Brain' session this morning and the sound of my own singing voice that I have discovered having previously believed I 'couldn't sing'; the leaves on the trees glistening in the sunshine after the rain, along the former towpath that is now a cycle track; whizzin along in the fresh air on my trusty old bike that I've had for over twenty years, and goes even better now the gears have been properly set - for the first time since I've had the bike!; the lively latin-American music that I can stream in via the internet, reminding me that life can be a 'Fiesta'...
Just reading your post made me feel more beautiful. Thanks for sharing Merlina!
I was stressed trying to get something finished in spite of Photoshop's acting up, when the pure white street cat I rescued jumped on my desk, gently patted my hand, stared at me with her bright blue eyes and then rubbed her head against my cheek - so clearly saying "it's cuddle time, relax and stroke me."
Cats are very good at giving us reminders like that!
Your comment inspired me to go cuddle with my dog. Thank you Isobel!
The beauty of an Autumn sunrise and sunset takes my breath away! The changing of the light of the sun as the days grow shorter, a beautiful, golden light so different from the brightness of Summer. The laughter and chatter of children and their parents in the early morning as they walk to school together is so sweet! The smell of a neighbor's fireplace in the night air....the moon in the night sky....And the beauty of the New York City skyline at night like a box of tiny jewels. Beauty is truly all around us wherever we are! God is a master artist and the beauty of life and nature and our creations add the masterpiece that is created everyday...everywhere!
Watching the world sing is beautiful. The birds are a flurry the leaves are falling busy streets are surrounded by beautiful colorful buildings and the nation's capital is full of people of different shapes and sizes. Each one a different sense of style. And I am dreaming.
The world is full of music, right?
The world is speaking to me through French Kissed glasses today. Messages filled with possibilities, positivity and perfection keep crossing my path. I am obsessed with the beautiful details and giddy with anticipation of the next delicious experience!
Love those glasses :).
There is something particularly interesting and alive about the city of Chicago on a seasonal autumn day. The pace of getting breakfast, the fall fashions of passersby, the scent and taste of a Chicago style hot dog, and the energy of possibility this weekend. Whatever it is, it's beautiful.
Today I got to witness my boss, a wonderful man, receive two awards. One for the district and another for the area for his outstanding service. It's beautiful to see someone recognized for the good he puts into the community. It makes me feel good that I'm being taught by somebody who cares so much about the world and the people in it.
Congrats to your boss! That's incredible, and especially that you respect him so much.
